Symbiosis started out as a platform for young and established artists to get familiar with performance techniques and concepts of new media art. Over the years it has evolved into an ongoing research into improvisation and performance, with a focus on electronic music and sound art. This research is not necessarily a separate program anymore, but integrates with running OKNO projects. For example in the OpenGreens and TIK projects it examens how to perform with extra-musical data, in the Pure Data Patching Circle it looks to apply Pure Data to performance.

Media performance is a complex area of expertise. Symbiosis couples the ongoing research and development of tools, techniques and practice to experimental public performances.
