Source of Entropy – Concept part 1
“No one can win against kipple,” he said, “except temporarily and
maybe in one spot, like in my apartment I’ve sort of created a stasis
between the pressure of kipple and nonkipple, for the time being.
But eventually I’ll die or go away, and then the kipple will again take over.
It’s a universal principle operating throughout the universe; the entire
universe is moving toward a final state of total, absolute
kippleization.”
― Philip K. Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Digital worlds are immune to entropy : there’s no ageing, decay,
or irreversible transformation. They load, events occur, and they
shut down. Though this resembles a lifecycle, it lacks material
consequence. It is empty and meaningless.
But what if we introduce entropy into a persistent digital world
by sampling a random physical square and using its transient
elements like stray objects, collected dust to drive virtual
deterioration?
Scanned elements will persist and accumulate, like kipple in Do
Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Entropy, the invisible force
shaping our existence, will leave its mark in digital
environments.
Over time, as these digital objects age and degrade in the
virtual, some will fall back into the physical world and get 3D
printed, ejected back into reality, but weathered, decayed and
fragile. This creates a loop much like an ecosystem between the
digital and the virtual.
The very fact that these objects transition between digital and
physical spaces, gives them meaning. After all, who hasn’t
wished to take a desired object from their dream back into
reality?
